Hey I’m Deborah Razo, founder of the Women’s Real Estate Network, also known as WREN. I was recently at a talk about negotiating for women and it was a real eye opener. Has negotiating been a process you’ve viewed as hostile or combative? Have you avoided it?
I was given these 5 tips and want to share them with you.
- Let’s think about negotiating in a different way. Shift into a more collaborative conversation. Most people call this more collaborative approach a “Win-Win” A concept where the results satisfy each side, and thus, both sides win. This objective focuses on creative was to satisfy all involved. And let’s face it, women are pretty good at coming up with creative solutions. I mean how many fights between kids, co-workers, girlfriends have we solved?
- Negotiation is about directing a conversation and let’s face it gender-wise we are the better conversationalists. There is nothing more natural than chatting for women. So direct the conversation toward the most desired outcomes and best alternatives. That was plural… never make a negotiation into a single issue, introduce multiple elements so you’ve got options.
- Build in time, be patient and hit the mute button. Yep, you have to be patient and know when to shut your mouth and listen. I mean listen till it hurts. You need to understand the other parties interests early on. Develop a joint agenda. The earlier you can understand their objectives the better. And that’s not the only time to hit the mute button! Make an offer or request then hit the mute button! Nothing communicates louder than silence.
- Ask questions. I was once told the person asking the questions controls the conversation. So get curious…. you the final decision maker? What is your desired outcome? How do you see that happening? ask, ask ask.
- Here’s the hard one… The essence of negotiating is asking for what you want. Women are reluctant to do this. We fear it will create hostility. Well ladies, I’m here to let you know think big!! Ask for what you want. Be relentless about focusing on your dream. Who are the best negotiators? Children. Why? Because they will tell you exactly what they want, how they want it and when they want it. And for any of you out there that have raised a child, they don’t quit until they have it. I’m not saying act like a 2 year old, but let’s start negotiating like one.
